Sell my car
I just want to sell my car. I want to get a new car with more room.
I'm the second owner. It's a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland with brown leather interior and a white sunroof. It has four cylinders and is economical on gas mileage with 156,310 miles. No accidents; reliable car.
The color is brown. The rims are hard rims, no hubcaps, not salvage, no accidents once again, and I'm just trying to get a bigger car because my family grew bigger, so I'm trying to sell my car to get a bigger car.
Preferred solution: Bluebook value

I would not have bought the vehicle if I had known it had been in a wreck. Carfax did not catch it.
Two weeks went by after I purchased it, and I used a different website. I had to pay money for it to get another Carfax, and it caught the crash after the fact of me purchasing the vehicle because I asked the car salesman at least 10 times, 'Has this car ever been in a wreck?' I asked all kinds of questions like that, and finally I said, 'Well, can you run me the Carfax?' Lo and behold, it did not show anything, and like you say, two weeks went by.
My wife went on the internet and found another Carfax thing that she purchased, and it caught it, and I was very upset. Yours truly, pissed off consumer.

Verified Reviewer |My Carfax is full of lies
Life happens and so now I have to sell my car to find out you guys have three people have owned it when there's only been two I bonded it since 2014 it doesn't show that and it shows all kinds of work done on my car inaccurately and some of it is dated incorrectly. I don't know how you guys get your information but this is such a pile of lies.
I've never been in a wreck.
I've only had a couple of things fixed because of idiots bumping into me or scratching my car and you're making my car worth less money because it's inaccurately being reported that's not cool. I am so mad right now.
Preferred solution: You need to report the stuff correctly the right times the right everything don't put stuff on there that didn't happen

Updated by user Aug 11, 2025Company has not fixed the issue and I have been provided with any apology.
While the report indicates 44 history records in total, this 14-year period is entirely unaccounted for. This information was in the report, but somehow it was edited or deleted. This missing information is crucial for a complete understanding of the vehicle's past. I'm reaching out regarding a truck that was purchased new and had only one owner, my father, Alton Ofczarzak {{Redacted}} He passed away on February 17, 2020.
I'm hoping you can assist me in locating its vehicle records. I recall these records being available previously, but they now appear to be missing. Employees within companies involved in VIN cloning or car cloning is a practice of using a vehicle identification number from a legally registered car to hide the identity of a stolen or salvaged vehicle. The procedure involves replacing the serial plate of a stolen or salvage-repaired vehicle with a plate containing the number of a validly registered vehicle of similar make, model, and year from another state, province, or country.
The use of this practice by organized theft rings is partially responsible for the creation of national databases such as the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System in the United States. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) cloning, also known as car cloning, is a sophisticated criminal practice where the identity of a legally registered vehicle is illicitly transferred to a stolen or salvaged vehicle. This deception allows criminals to disguise the true origin of a vehicle, making it appear legitimate to law enforcement and potential buyers. The process typically involves replacing the original VIN plate of a stolen or salvage-repaired vehicle with a VIN plate from a legally registered vehicle of a similar make, model, and year, often sourced from a different state, province, or country.
This practice is a significant concern for law enforcement agencies globally due to its role in facilitating vehicle theft, fraud, and other illicit activities. The primary motivation behind VIN cloning is to enable the sale of stolen vehicles or to re-register vehicles that have been declared total losses by insurance companies (salvage vehicles) without proper inspection or disclosure. Organized crime rings frequently employ this technique to integrate stolen vehicles into the legitimate market, making them difficult to trace. The use of VIN cloning has directly contributed to the development and enhancement of national and international databases, such as the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) in the United States, which aims to combat vehicle fraud and theft by providing a comprehensive record of vehicle titles, brands (e.g., salvage, flood), and theft histories.
Law enforcement agencies and vehicle history reporting services like Carfax and AutoCheck utilize these databases to identify cloned vehicles and protect consumers. Methods of VIN Cloning VIN cloning can be executed through various methods, ranging from simple plate swaps to more elaborate digital manipulations: Physical Plate Replacement: This is the most common method, where the VIN plate (typically located on the dashboard, door jamb, or engine bay) of a stolen or salvaged vehicle is physically replaced with a counterfeit plate bearing the VIN of a legitimate vehicle. Digital Cloning: In some advanced cases, criminals may attempt to digitally alter vehicle records in databases to match a cloned VIN, though this is more challenging and less common due to robust security measures. Paper Cloning: This involves creating fraudulent registration documents and titles that correspond to a legitimate VIN, which are then used to register a stolen vehicle.
The impact of VIN cloning is far-reaching, affecting consumers, insurance companies, and law enforcement. Consumers who unknowingly purchase a cloned vehicle risk losing their investment and facing legal complications when the vehicle's true identity is discovered. Insurance companies incur significant losses due to fraudulent claims and the increased risk associated with stolen vehicles. To combat VIN cloning, several preventative measures and investigative techniques are employed: VIN Verification: Law enforcement and vehicle inspectors often check multiple VIN locations on a vehicle (e.g., dashboard, door jamb, engine, frame) to ensure they all match and appear original.
Database Checks: Utilizing national and international databases like NMVTIS, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), and Interpol's Stolen Motor Vehicle Database is crucial for identifying vehicles with suspicious histories or multiple registrations. Consumer Awareness: Educating consumers about the risks of VIN cloning and advising them to perform thorough vehicle history checks (e.g., via Carfax or AutoCheck) before purchasing a used car is vital. Legislation and Enforcement: Stricter laws and increased penalties for VIN cloning and related offenses, along with enhanced collaboration among law enforcement agencies, are essential in deterring this criminal activity. Our reports are based on information given to us by thousands of data sources who choose to work with us. We continuously contract with new sources to obtain new and archived data and we update our reports as often as possible.
We do not guarantee the reporting of all data, but rather recommend using our reports along with a thorough inspection from a certified mechanic before purchasing a vehicle.
At this time, your case is considered resolved. Thank you, Blake
