I had a 4 wheeling mishap (rock scrape) in 2009 that resulted in some superficial body damage to the left side of my 2005 F-150, after the scrape we drove it home from Nevada to Los Angeles with no trouble

. My insurance group (Farmers) had a claim accessor call me and he said my truck should be totaled even though he had not inspected it himself, seen no photos, or spoken with the body shop.

I said baloney and called my agent. She dispatched an inspector to view the damage and make a judgement. The inspector immediately agreed with me and recommended Farmers fund the claim and repair my truck, not total it. My truck had only body work, no frame, sub-frame, driveline, suspension, steering, or any mechanical work was needed. The truck was repaired and I've enjoyed it for the past 7 years as a strong and reliable vehicle.

Now I'm selling it. I researched vehicles in it's class and priced it competitively to sell fast, I've had a lot of interest and many full price offers. I sold it to one of the 1st guys who came pre-approved and was anxious to take possession. Enter CARFAX.

He said that before we finalize the deal, he'd like to run a CARFAX report on it. No problem I said, as I was confident he would find nothing objectionable.

CARFAX has my car a total loss with a salvage title and 2 subsequent wrecks with major structural damage. I was shocked as none of this was remotely accurate, the title is clean, no salvage, and we had no other accidents after the rock scrape affair. All of this is corroborated by my agent at Farmers and the California DMV.

CARFAX is an ivory tower living in a virtual reality of their own making. They have made no attempt to resolve this and remain adamant that they are correct and beyond reproach. I'm aghast and behind the 8-ball as they have become a presumed and de-facto authority with little recourse for the consumer to force them to account for their practices or divulge their sources. Their position is essentially guilt by claim, and regard any question of their practices as evidence of the questioner's culpability in a fraudulent agenda.

I'd love to see an independent investigation from the Better business bureau into CARFAX and force them to account for their business model under oath.
